In the present Information Society context, schools must reconsider their role
and change their old practices, much more centered on teaching than on learning, so
that they can educate students who are able to deal with the information world and
prepared for lifelong learning. School libraries are decisively important in this
transformation process, but, in Portugal, the steps taken in that direction are still
unsteady. The goal of this study was to know how Information Literacy is approached
in the libraries of the twelve schools of Sintra (Grades 5 to 9), which belong to the
School Libraries Network.
For this purpose, a mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology was used,
through a descriptive case study centered in questions related to the school libraries
practices in this area and to their integration in the schools, bearing in mind the
librarians’ training and experience. To establish a theoretical framework for this
study, we considered the constructive approach to learning, as a basis for the
collaboration between the school library and the curriculum, some of the many
information literacy development models and their usefulness, the importance of
defining information literacy standards and, among others, Todd’s and Kuhlthau’s
research on the information-to-knowledge construction process through guided
inquiry.
Two kinds of research tools were used: an inquiry through questionnaire and a
semi-directive interview. The first was presented to the school librarians and the
second was applied to the three librarians whose libraries showed a higher level of
work in the area of information literacy.
The conclusions of this study show that there is a considerable distance
between the international standards and the practices of the analyzed libraries. Thus, it
becomes evident that there is a great need for teacher training, particularly focusing
on school library teams and that the establishment of national standards of
information literacy is highly necessary, if we want to meet the directives of IFLA
and UNESCO.</dim:field>
