<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">The objectives proposed by this study include identifying the protagonists
(mediators), purposes and contexts, describing the successes and failures, and
assessing results, in the domain of translation/interpretation in Macao, within the
period from 1557 to 1915.
In Macao, translation and interpretation always played an important role in
the society being developed there, ever since the arrival of the first Westerners (the
Portuguese) on the coasts of Southern China. The linguistic, social and cultural
mediation, led, throughout the centuries, by jurubaças, línguas, interpreters and
translators, but also by missionaries, mostly Jesuit, was fundamental for the
creation of a multilingual and multicultural society, and for the peaceful coexistence
of such different communities and cultures.
Despite the bridges established by these mediators, the relations – be
they commercial or diplomatic – which brought about the settlement of the first
traders, the informal expansion of the mercantile city and the creation of its own
organs of power such as the Town Hall (Senado) and the Misericórdia, did not
prove to be easy.
At first, the Western traders who went to China always used Chinese
interpreters. However, from an early stage, the missionaries needed to learn
Chinese, because it was impossible to spread Christianity, that is, to evangelise,
through an interpreter. Thus, the missionaries, in addition to their evangelising,
educational and cultural mission, come to play an important role in linguistic and
cultural mediation.
Taking as starting point, the concept of cultural mediator, as argued in
Stephen Bochener’s1 The Mediating Person and Cultural Identity (1981), it will be
seen how the interpreters-translators, taking on linguistic and cultural mediation,
functioned in Macao, given that, living in two different worlds, they had to acquire
skills in both those worlds.
They were required to develop certain skills in the two cultures, such as
knowledge of history, values, traditions and customs and, in addition, technical
and social communication skills.
Given such differences in their interlocutors, both China and Christians
revealed aspects until then unknown. But only through dialogue with the other
can the similarities and differences, the fundamental and individual aspects, be
discovered, and only thus can mutual understanding and enrichment and what
today is called intercultural communication be achieved.
It is not, therefore, the initial difference which is important, but the
commitment to linguistic, ideological and cultural exchange, since each language
shapes the way of thinking and favours lines of thought, at times incompatible.
Paraphrasing C. Hagège (2002), we may say that societies do not die,
not only because they have historians or analysts or official narrators, but also
because they have languages and it is through these that they are narrated.</dim:field>
