Contudo, e apesar de nas instituições europeias todas as vinte e quatro línguas dos Estados Membros serem oficialmente aceites – e ser encorajado, defendido e protegido o seu uso – cada vez mais a língua inglesa é utilizada como língua global, sendo a língua que mais frequentemente é comum a intervenientes com diferentes línguas maternas. Nos Países Baixos, o uso do inglês está bastante enraizado sendo utilizado em diversos contextos, desde o lazer ao contexto académico, passando pela comunicação social. Se, por um lado, é de grande utilidade e enriquecimento individual e coletivo o conhecimento que a maioria dos neerlandeses tem desta segunda língua, por outro lado, será que há um impacto na identidade cultural do país? O uso do inglês nos Países Baixos tem sido de tal forma difundido e é tão comum ouvir falar esta língua que há quem fale do surgimento de uma nova língua, Dutch-English ou Dunglish como fusão das duas línguas. Há mesmo quem defenda que o neerlandês está a ser negligenciado em detrimento do inglês. Existem diferentes pontos de vista em relação a esta questão, que serão analisados, de forma a tentar perceber as implicações do uso massivo da língua inglesa nos Países Baixos e qual o sentimento geral em relação a esta situação. Multilingualism is one of the founding principles of the European Union (EU) and one of the characteristics that most contributes to Europe's identity as an intercultural and multilingual community. However, despite the fact that in the European institutions all twenty-four languages of the Member States are officially accepted – and their use is encouraged, defended and protected – English is increasingly used as a global language, being the language that is more often common to actors with different mother tongues. In the Netherlands, the use of English is quite settled, being used in different contexts, from leisure to academic context and also the media. If, on the one hand, the knowledge that most Dutch people have of this second language is of great use and individual and collective enrichment, on the other hand, is there an impact on the country's cultural identity? The use of English in the Netherlands has been so widespread and it is so common to hear this language spoken that there are those who speak of the emergence of a new language, Dutch-English or Dunglish as a fusion of the two languages. Some even argue that Dutch is being neglected to the detriment of English.
