No norte de Portugal o Barroco tem um dos seus ex-libris no Palácio do Freixo, monumento idealizado pelo conhecido arquiteto, Nicolau Nasoni. A presente dissertação tem por objetivo investigar a história do Palácio do Freixo, contemplando o passado e o presente. O interesse deste trabalho radica no facto de haver muita informação mas não um fio condutor dos acontecimentos históricos, que reúna e sintetize diferentes fontes de informação, por forma a compilar todas as informações que permitam construir e perceber a sua história até aos dias de hoje. Nesta dissertação será dado ênfase ao contexto histórico e geográfico, às características Barrocas inerentes à sua construção, e à sua classificação enquanto Monumento Nacional. Serão também abordadas as inúmeras transformações que o Palácio sofreu, sobretudo, no final do século XX, até à sua reabilitação no ano 2000. Por fim, será dado relevo à atribuição de novas funcionalidades para o Palácio e para o edifício das antigas Moagens Harmonia, em 2005, e que tem permitido a sua preservação e salvaguarda, através do turismo. Através da análise histórica deste importante Monumento Nacional, este trabalho pretende contribuir, não só para o conhecimento da história do Palácio do Freixo, mas também para a necessidade de proteção e utilização responsável do património português. The Baroque was born in Rome and spread throughout Europe and the old colonial empires. In the north of Portugal, the Baroque has one of its representations in Palácio do Freixo, a monument designed by the well-known architect, Nicolau Nasoni. This dissertation aims to investigate the history of Palácio do Freixo, contemplating its past and the present. The interest of this work stems from the fact that there is a lot of information but no common thread of historical events which collects and synthesizes different sources of information so as to compile all the facts that allow for the building (or creation) and understanding of the palace’s history to date. This dissertation will emphasize the historical and geographical context of the palace, the Baroque characteristics inherent to its construction, and its classification as a national monument. The numerous transformations that the palace underwent will also be addressed, especially at the end of the twentieth century, until its rehabilitation in 2000. Finally, emphasis will be given to the attribution of new functions to the Palace and to the building of the former Moagens Harmonia, in 2005, which have enabled its preservation and safeguard through tourism.
