<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="pt_PT">The position of class director comes up in response to the complexity of school
organization, resulting from the mass school - school for all- which had its beginning in 1964
with the enlargement of compulsory education. This has brought with it a heterogeneity of actors
to the same space, where motivations and interests are quite different.
The class director, as an intermediate leadership structure in the school organization, plays
an extremely relevant role in the search for cohesion and interaction among the different
educational actors (students, teachers and families), in an attempt to engage and involve towards
common goals that contribute to improve students’ learning. Yet, over (almost) six decades of
its existence, it is clear there has been progressive regulation around this structure to clarify and
expand its functions, despite these being scattered in several legal regulations.
Considering this scenario, this study aims to understand the perception of class directors
about their role in the processes of change and pedagogical innovation, within the complexity of
school organization. To this end, a framework was outlined that led us to learn about the fiftyseven years of existence of the position of class director, through the normative mapping
organized in evolutionary cycles according to the programs enacted by the several Constitutional
Governments and a diachronic survey of research and empirical studies on the role of the class
director as an intermediate leader who must be prepared to respond to the complexity of the
globalizing world, where uncertainty, instability and disorder are inseparable variables.
The study followed a research methodology with a case study design, with a mixed
approach, involving data of qualitative and quantitative nature, whose complementarity enables
a deeper and more documented understanding of the subject. The results show that the class
director knows his/her real functions as a leader of an intermediate leadership structure, who is
responsible for managing and promoting reflection among peers to improve students’ learning,
particularly at the level of pedagogical changes and innovations, that are intended to be effective
for students’ success. However, from the participants’ perspective, there are many factors that
condition the effective and efficient performance of their functions.</dim:field>
