<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="pt_PT">The neonatal period is critical in a child's life, due to its greater vulnerability and
greater risk of death. Thus, the care provided to the newborn (NB) is of the utmost
importance and has an impact on their future health. Culture, myths and beliefs are revealed
in a set of traditional knowledge that often prevails over scientific knowledge, leading to
care practices with negative health consequences, such as omphalitis.
In Angola, there is a high number of deaths in newborns, with septicemia being one
of the main causes. Maintaining the current trend, between 2017 and 2030, it is estimated
that around 60 million children will die worldwide, half of them newborns (UNIGME,
2017). This evidence motivated us to develop this study, which aimed to study the
knowledge and practices of Angolan mothers in caring for the newborn, namely the
umbilical stump.
This is a descriptive, exploratory, comparative and cross-sectional study based on a
methodology mainly of a qualitative nature. We opted for a non-probabilistic sample for
convenience. We request the participation of qualified informants to give their specialized
contribution on the topic. We use the triangulation of data collection means through semistructured interviews, filmic, photographic observation, direct observation and observation
grid recording. We carry out the treatment through descriptive statistics and content analysis.
The main results show that the knowledge and practices of Angolan mothers in the
care of the newborn, namely the umbilical stump, derive from the empirical component
transmitted mainly by the family through the generations, and above all by the grandparents
of the newborn and the scientific component through health professionals.
The length of stay in the city of Luanda, of natural mothers from various provinces
of Angola, can be an indicator of the acculturation to the city and the reason for some
similarities in their testimonies when compared to the natural mothers of Luanda. However,
we observe that mothers with migratory experience reveal some behaviors that are different
from those of natural mothers in Luanda, namely, by mentioning alcohol more frequently as
prior knowledge, although it is the mothers of Luanda who most use it in isolation as a
practice. in the care of the umbilical stump.
The practices in the care of the umbilical stump reveal a variety of traditional media
and products, resulting in incorrect practices and with harmful consequences for the
newborn. We found that there are mothers who, even referring to know the practice
recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), choose to maintain traditional
care. In view of the high cultural influence in the care of Angolan mothers, we recommend
investing in the training of professionals in the field of culturally competent health care,
contributing to the training of mothers and reducing neonatal morbidity and mortality in
Angola.</dim:field>
