A presente dissertação dedica-se ao estudo do desenvolvimento da consciência
metalinguística no bilinguismo precoce e na aquisição bilingue simultânea do português
e do neerlandês. A investigação é desenvolvida a partir de um estudo de caso de uma
criança, dos 2;4 até os 3 anos de idade, por meio da observação, descrição e análise das
produções linguísticas, nos vários contextos de interação do seu dia a dia, sendo
orientada pelos princípios teóricos da Psicolinguística (Gombert, 1992; Batoréo, 1989,
2000, 2009, 2011 e 2013) e da Aquisição Bilingue da Primeira Infância (BFLA) (De
Houwer, 1995, 1998 e 2009; Meisel, 1989, 2001 e 2007; Genesee, 1989).
Partindo da premissa de que as crianças que adquirem duas línguas em
simultâneo desenvolvem dois sistemas linguísticos independentes (Genesee, 1989;
Meisel, 1989; De Houwer 1990), visamos, com esta investigação, averiguar em que
medida a criança em estudo desenvolve uma consciência metalinguística que lhe
permite distinguir os contextos de uso das línguas em aquisição.
Pela interpretação e análise dos dados recolhidos, podemos concluir que a
criança apresenta capacidade para distinguir as duas línguas maternas e que não as
confunde. Consideramos que a escolha de língua maioritariamente apropriada para
interagir com o seu interlocutor, bem como as outras manifestações da atividade
metalinguística identificadas no corpus evidenciam que a criança possui uma
consciência metalinguística quanto ao uso contextualizado do português e do
neerlandês.
Os nossos dados indicam ainda que a distinção, ou não, entre as duas línguas e
os respetivos contextos de uso não pode ser interpretada apenas como a presença, ou
ausência, de uma consciência metalinguística relativa ao uso distinto das duas línguas.
Verificamos que a escolha aparentemente “inapropriada” da língua pela criança poderá
ser determinada por um conjunto de fatores, tais como o perfil linguístico dos
interlocutores, uma lacuna lexical em um dos reportórios linguísticos, a preferência de
determinados vocábulos em um dos idiomas, e, até, o próprio papel da criança nas
interações (iniciativa vs. resposta). Por fim, verificamos ainda que também o
interlocutor desempenha um papel importante nas escolhas linguísticas da criança,
designadamente através das várias estratégias de discurso que adota para interagir com a
criança.
This dissertation is dedicated to the study of the development of metalinguistic
awareness in early bilingualism and the simultaneous bilingual acquisition of
Portuguese and Dutch. The investigation is developed from a case study of a child, from
2; 4 to 3 years old, through the observation, description and analysis of linguistic
productions, in the various contexts of daily interaction, being guided by the theoretical
principles of Psycholinguistics (Gombert, 1992; Batoréo, 1989, 2000, 2009, 2011 and
2013) and of Bilingual First Language Acquisition (BFLA) (De Houwer, 1995, 1998
and 2009; Meisel, 1989, 2001 and 2007; Genesee, 1989).
Starting from the premise that children who acquire two languages
simultaneously develop two independent linguistic systems (Genesee, 1989; Meisel,
1989; De Houwer 1990), we aim, with this investigation, to verify to what extent the
child under study develops a metalinguistic awareness that allows him to distinguish the
contexts of use of the languages being acquired.
Through the interpretation and analysis of the collected data, we can conclude
that the child has the ability to distinguish the two mother tongues and does not confuse
them. We consider that the choice of language mostly appropriate to interact with their
interlocutor, as well as the other manifestations of metalinguistic activity identified in
the corpus, show that the child has a metalinguistic awareness regarding the
contextualized use of Portuguese and Dutch.
Our data also suggest that the distinction, or not, between the two languages and
the respective contexts of use, cannot be interpreted only as the presence, or absence, of
a metalinguistic awareness regarding the distinct use of the two languages. We found
that the child's apparently “inappropriate” choice of language may be determined by a
number of factors, such as the linguistic profile of the interlocutors, a lexical gap in one
of the linguistic repertoires, the preference of certain words in one of the languages, and
even the child's own role in interactions (initiative vs. response). Finally, we also verify
that the interlocutor also plays an important role in the child's linguistic choices, namely
through the various discourse strategies that he adopts to interact with the child.
